LMS rebuild 4-6-0 Claughton Class No 6004 is seen manoeuvreing a vehicle on to the rear of a Rugby-bound train on 8th August 1937. Built as LNWR No 42 'Princess Louise' by Crewe works in August 1920, the locomotive was one of twenty rebuilt with a larger boiler, in this instance in April 1928, although it had been renumbered as LMS No 6004 in November 1926. Ten of the twenty were fitted with Caprotti valve gear with the other ten being fitted with Walschaerts gear. By 1937 only four were left, two with each sort of gear. Their lifespan was then expected to be very brief, but a shortage of motive power on the LMS led to their reprieve, and the Walschaerts gear locomotives, No 6004 and No 6017 were repainted at Crewe in 1938. Wartime demands greatly extended their lives and No 6004 passed into BR days, though by 1948 it had become the sole survivor of the class and was confined to working goods trains, based on Edge Hill. It was finally withdrawn from service in April 1949. This closer view of the girder supporting the down home signal for No. 2 box shows both of the pillars which had supported the earlier footbridge, and gives an impression of how narrow it was.
