Close up of image 'lnwrcov554' showing Coventry No 3 Signal
box, Spencer Park foot bridge and the approach lines to No 1 Goods shed. No 3
signal box controlled some of the pointwork providing access to the goods yard
as well as the the Nuneaton branch junction with the Birmingham line. The
numerous wagons in this view are primarily covered vans many of which would
have been off-loaded inside the good sheds. The Spencer Park footbridge (No
322) was built to provide access on a historic right of way and was extended at
least once to accommodate the goods yard when it was enlarged in the late
1890s. The track running parallel and immediately next to Spencer Park was the
route to Birmingham and off this, just out of sight below the photograph, the
branch to Nuneaton. To view the layout drawing of the yard relevant to this
photograph click here.
