Another view of the London and Birmingham Bury water column and fire devil located at the Birmingham end of the down platform. The printed notice states 'Enginemen when taking water place 2 briquettes in tender'. The briquettes were used to soften the hard water found in Coventry and would reduce the build up of lime scale which could severely damage the boilers of steam engines. The water column was taken to the National Railway Museum when it was removed at the start of rebuilding in 1959.
