The inspection pits had three brick steps leading down to their floors which sloped to the middle. At the shed end of the inspection pit a row of timber sleepers, laid parallel to the rails, ran in between them which formed the first step. The timber sleepers were provided because they would be safer to walk upon than brick or cobble flooring.
