Coundon Road Station Signal Box was erected in 1876 and had 22 levers for operating both signals and pointwork controlling the station and Coal Wharf. Despite the opening of the Power Box at Coventry station and the withdrawal of passenger services on 18th January 1965 the signal box remained open until 23rd May 2009 when it was closed together with signal boxes at Three Spires Junction and Hawkesbury Lane. The signal box was the last remaining manually operated signal cabin (as described by the LNWR) in the Coventry area although the 22 levers had been reduced to just four. The signalman for the last three year's of its working life was Darren Towler who then moved to the new Rugby Signalling Centre. In later years the walls to the machine room seen beneath the cabin were rebuilt with the windows being omitted and the wooden steps were replaced by a metal staircase. John Taylor writes, 'I thought you would be interested to know that, whilst driving across the level crossing today, I noticed that the disused structure has been demolished over the weekend of 25th and 26th January 2014. Unsure of the exact date. Likewise the box at Hawkesbury Lane suffered the same fate the previous weekend 18th and 19th January 2014. Again unsure of the exact date'. Darren Towler has since written to inform us that the exact date and time for demolition was around 01:30 - 01:50 hrs on Sunday 26th January 2014.
