The LMS office situated inside Birmingham Corporation's Smithfield wholesale fruit and vegetable market

The LMS office situated inside Birmingham Corporation's Smithfield wholesale fruit and vegetable market on 13th September 1927. Such offices were located at any point where the railway company could anticipate the volume of traffic would justify the cost of providing such facilities. The LMS office was located at one end of the balcony sited with the 'new' section of the market and had a lower roof than the original structure. The stairs to the balcony can be seen on the right through the two columns whilst to its right part of the ornamental iron gates can be seen. Outside the LMS office is a row of papers hung from hooks and are thought to be timetables, brochures and other documentation advertising the services of the company. In the foreground at ground level are various containers for transporting fruit and vegetables. Richard Foster writes, 'The tall narrow barrel-shaped cases or half-barrels on Henry Sinkin's stall below probably contained Spanish Almeria grapes. The bunches of grapes were packed in cork dust to prevent damage in transit. The tall circular wicker baskets appear to have contained cabbages or cauliflowers and the shorter ones apples. At this time the majority of goods came packed in straw'.
