A photograph of Curzon Street District Goods Accounts Department (Abstracts) office staff in September 1938. Whereas once the roles would be the principal domain of men, the use of women to fullfil administrative functions had grown as a consequence of their large scale employment during First World War and the realisation that they could be employed at a considerable saving on using men. The photograph was taken outside of Hardwick's building in Canal Street to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first train from Birmingham to London.
