An internal view of inside the grain warehouse which was located on the first floor of the old GJR departure platform seen in 1966. In addition to the grain the railway also stored flour in bags too. The upper floor was served by three fixed hydraulic cranes and an electric hoist to raise goods whilst chutes were used to quickly lower the flour and grain on to the waiting carts. On the ground floor was located the metal warehouse containing the more expensive metals and castings. The warehouses fulfilled the same function as logistic companies perform today except to a much wider and fragmented market. In the case of retail goods the railway's facilities allowed the manufacturer to supply multiple stores by advising the railway as to which retail company required which goods. These would be delivered by railway cartage with the manufacturer being charged accordingly.
