Curzon Street Goods Station: lnwrcs2147
Notice board erected on the former hotel extension on the
corner of Canal Street and Curzon Street in the 1950s. Logistics is often
thought as a 21st century development combining the development of road
transport and telecommunications. In fact the railways were the first
organisations to provide an industrial scale logistical infrastructure that
covered the whole of the country. The sign above shows that the LMS, as did the
LNWR previously, both transported goods as well as providing warehouses to
store goods. The provision of bonded warehouses for alcohol and tobacco meant
that the manufacturer of these goods did not need to pay the Customs &
Excise the relevant taxes until they were delivered to the customer. This was a
very important facility to businesses who needed to manage their cash flow as
carefully as today's businesses.
