Plan of the approach and layout of Curzon Street station's train shed and its Engine House as seen in 1852

Plan of the approach and layout of Curzon Street station's train shed and its Engine House as seen in 1852. The Engine House has been further extended with a straight shed extension being built at the rear of the roundhouse and across the canal. The juxtaposition of the new lines into New Street station in relation to the Engine House can also be seen. The top section shows the L & B station whilst the bottom section shows the location of the Grand Junction railway station. On the left the Grand Junction Railway has erected a canal Tranship Shed which has replaced the L & B Tranship demolished as part of the extension to New Street station. The diagonal boundary at the bottom was the wall to Curzon Street and it was a clause inserted into one of the many Railway Acts by Birmingham's Street Commissioners that effectively prevented both companies from crossing Curzon Street via a level crossing. The Commissioners obtained three conditions:

that the crossing was not to be used by passenger trains
that the crossing was not to be used more than twelve times per day
that at no time was the road to be obstructed for more than five minutes

To make sure that that the conditions would be complied with, a fine of £5 was set for each occasion the last two conditions were breached.
