Close up showing Leyland S 30 T motor lorry Fleet No 52B, registration number LE 9568 built originally as a double decker bus in September 1918. The ladies are wearing a common style of dress and headgear which probably indicates that they are wearing a uniform. The banner beneath which they are seated carries the message 'We clean the carriages while our men are at the front' whilst a worthy cause they do not appear to be not too enthused about participating. In 1912 the Leyland Company introduced the S-Type Subsidy Lorry and were the first manufacturer to be granted a certificate by the War Office following the Subsidy Scheme trials in 1912. The success in the trials resulted in an initial order for 88 chassis specially built to secure the War Office Grant of £110, the 30hp Leyland Subsidy Lorry sold for £780.
