British Railways Standard Class 4MT 4-6-0 No 75035 is seen entering Foleshill station on an down local passenger service. Built at Swindon works to Lot 401 in August 1953 No 75035 remained in service until July 1967 when it was withdrawn from 12E Tebay shed to be scrapped in January 1968 by GH Campbell of Airdrie. The class was introduced in 1951 and were designed for mixed traffic use on secondary routes where the otherwise ubiquitous BR Standard Class 5 and their predecessors, Stanier's 'Black Fives', would be too heavy. They were essentially a tender version of the Standard Class 4MT 2-6-4T, with similar characteristics to the GWR Manor Class, though unlike the Manors they were built to the universal loading gauge. The 4-6-0 locomotives used the same running gear as the 2-6-4T tank engine and used the leading bogie from the Standard Class 5. The same firebox, smokebox and boiler, albeit with the boiler barrel increased in length by 9 inches, was also employed. The design work was done at Brighton under the direction of British Railway's CME, R A Riddles, with help from the drawing office of Swindon, Derby and Doncaster works. All of 80 of the class were built at the former GWR's Swindon works.
