Some long term storage facilities were available at Foleshill by means of coal stacking areas - see image 'lnwrf127a'. Having a coal stacks meant that coal merchants could take advantage of the lower price of coal available during the summer months. In parallel with the general decline of both goods and passenger traffic on the railways resulting from competition with road transport, the Clean Air Acts passed by Parliament in the 1960s together with the discovery of gas in the North Sea meant that coal too would become a lost source of revenue to railways.
