Ivatt 2-6-2T No 41223 stands at platform 3 ready to depart for Birmingham New Street with its two coach train in early 1955. Prior to the introduction of DMUs in March 1956 British Railways had introduced an hourly push-pull service between New Street and Sutton Coldfield, soon extended to Four Oaks to satisfy passenger demand. This was the first regular interval local service operating out of Birmingham since the First World War. A Class 3MT Tank locomotive built in October 1948 at Crewe works, No 41223 was a continuation of the LMS' last 2-6-2T design and would remain in service until March 1966 when it was withdrawn from 83G Templecombe shed.
