Although the photograph was taken in June 1949 the locomotive has been re-numbered by the addition of 40,000 to its LMS number (2489) and this is displayed on both the bunker and smokebox door. There is no sign of either the British Railways logo or LMS lettering on the locomotive's tank sides. This is probably because the locomotive is still in plain black without lining, a practical money saving option initially implemented at the outbreak of the Second World War and continued during the post-war austerity period.
