Gibbet Hill Signal Cabin: lnwrgh2352

View of Gibbet Hill's signal cabin looking in the direction of Wainbody Wood and Coventry in August 1972. The photograph was taken shortly before Gibbet Hill signal cabin (the LNWR and Great Central described them as cabins whilst most other railway companies described them as signal boxes) was closed and prior to the line becoming at a later date part of the modern national network. Natalie Jones writes in a forum on Signal Box that the cabin 'is thought to have been a LNWR Type 5 as it was built in early 1916 to service a bidirectional goods loop. The goods loops were fitted with facing point locks on the trap points at the exit but had ground shunting signals for departure. As they appear on the 1916 LNWR plan submitted (as well as the 1960 Coventry PSB numbering plan they were obviously installed from new this way'

David Churchill writes 'The photo was taken from the LH side of the diagram whilst on a train travelling towards Coventry. The grassy line in the centre is the old goods loop by then I presume disused. The line on to Coventry was, I think, then still double track and the up line can be seen in the left hand side background. From memory the line was singled soon afterwards and Gibbet Hill cabin closed.'
