A line of British Railways 16-ton steel mineral wagons, some
loaded and others unloaded, stand alongside the Weigh Bridge Office in August
1961. To the right of the office can be seen a number of wharfs provided for
the local merchants. There was an incentive to merchants to empty the wagons as
after three days of standing in the yard a fee was charged for each further
day. Coal traffic was the primary traffic at most stations in the country after
the Second World War and Harborne was no exception. The combined influence of
competition from road traffic and the Clean Air Act meant that this traffic too
was to rapidly diminish.
