LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Harborne

Harborne Station: lnwrh71

Looking from the Hagley Road end of the station towards the turntable with the horse and carriage landing on the left. Despite a competitive day return fare of 3d from Harborne to New Street and a weekly third class season ticket for 2 shillings, traffic still declined to the point that the stations on the line closed on 24th November 1934. If competition from buses wasn't enough of an issue with more frequent services and routes that connected the new estates with the city centre, the main issue facing the railway was the LNWR's practice of keeping the train waiting at Icknield Port Road if a main line train from Wolverhampton was late. Being a single platform terminus, a relatively rare occurrence, the station only required two signals, a home and a starter, the latter being seen on the left. This view shows what is thought to be the parcel shed, the structure with a curved roof, the gas lighting being both lamp posts placed at intervals along the length of the platform and suspended lamps from the glazed canopy.
