Hampton in Arden Station: lnwrhia2982

A late Victorian view of Hampton in Arden station looking towards Birmingham with a P&W working on the down line

A late Victorian view of Hampton in Arden station looking towards Birmingham with a P&W working on the down line. The work undertaken must have been considered an emergency as the LNWR locomotive on the up line is being held by signals. The footbridge and platform structures have little in the way of soot and smoke damage indicating that the photograph was taken not long after 1884 when the station opened. The platform lighting is provided by oil lamps, of a type which were still in use at Tile Hill station when the line was electrified in the 1960s. At Hampton in Arden this lighting was replaced by oil gas lamps as seen in image 'lnwrhia2967' and then electric lighting as seen in image 'lnwrhia2962'.
