LMS Route: Rugby to Wolverhampton
Hampton Station: lnwrhiaj2986
A 1931 view of Hampton Station looking West with the
station's landing dock seen on the right. Landing docks were originally
designed to be used to either to tranship livestock or horse-drawn road
vehicles on to flat wagons. Live stock were loaded into cattle wagons from the
side whereas road vehicles were loaded end-on, that is over the buffers. The
landing dock seen above has been designed for loading road vehicles although in
this photograph the load appears to be a heavy piece of machinery. In the 19th
century very wealthy landowners and businessmen would often load their personal
horse-drawn carriages when travelling to their London or other homes.
