Looking towards Wolverhampton from the rear of a DMU with the Harborne branch seen climbing on the left. The pair of lines diverging to the right are the lines to Walsall via Soho East Junction. This allowed the LNWR, and its subsequent successors, to operate trains out of New Street to Walsall via both ends of the station, the other route being via the Grand Junction route. The signal in between the two sets of lines is unusual. Because of the limited space and the need to ensure drivers identified the correct signal for the Wolverhampton to New Street up line, the lattice post is centered between the two sets of tracks. The two signal arms are then hung on a parallel post supported top and bottom by two horizontal beams. The bridge in the distance carried the Dudley Road over the railway.
