Close up illustrating how the Harborne Railway Company exploited its position by selling advertising space

Close up of image 'lnwrhr66' illustrating how the Harborne Railway Company exploited its position by selling advertising space. Such advertising was an everyday part of the railway scene as other than printed material advertising via billboards and posters was the only way businesses could promote themselves. Billboards and posters required the installation or erection of posterboards to mount them on. Enamel signs such as those seen above were not only robust and therefore long lasting against the elements and the corrosive atmosphere associated with railways but were also free standing requiring just a few screws to fix them to whatever surface was available.
