LMS Route: Nuneaton to Leamington
Kenilworth Station: lnwrk156
Ex-LNWR 3P 4-4-0 'Precursor class' No 25300 'Hydra' is seen
passing Cherry Orchard Brickworks on a four-coach local passenger service to
Leamington circa 1938. The photographer is standing on Whitemoor Road bridge
looking towards Coventry with Park Hill road bridge in the distance. This
locomotive was a common sight in the area being a regular on Leamington to
Nuneaton services. Built as LNWR No 1617 by Crewe works in August 1905, No
25300 was first re- numbered by the LMS in January 1928 as No 5300 and then
again, as No 25300, when it was placed on the duplicate list to make way for
the Patriot and later the Jubilee class locomotives, before being withdrawn
from service in July 1940 from Crewe shed.
