LMS Route: Nuneaton to Leamington
Kenilworth Station: lnwrk3150
An unidentified ex-LNWR 4-6-0 'Claughton Class' locomotive
on a down train to Birmingham New Street circa mid to late 1920s. Designed by
Charles Bowen Cooke, the locomotives were introduced in 1913, the first of the
class, No 2222 being named in honour of Sir Gilbert Claughton, who was the
Chairman of the LNWR at that time. A total of 130 were built, all at Crewe
works up to 1921. Unfortunately it failed to live up to expectations being a
mediocre performer because weight restrictions and equipment limitations at
Crewe limited the size of the boiler, hence engine power. The four cylinder
design and valve events were not optimised either resulting in twenty being
rebuilt by the LMS with larger boilers.
