View of an unidentified ex-Midland Railway 3F 0-6-0
locomotive coming off the Berkswell branch whilst at the head of an up coal
train. The Midland Railway positioned the driver on the right which meant that
the driver was located on the side of the cab nearest the camera whereas most
other railways, including the LMS within which the MR was absorbed in 1923, had
the driver on the left hand side of the cab. The train appears to be comprised
of five and seven-plank Private Owner wagons and would have originated from the
Birmingham area as north of Berkswell there were no other routes for the train
to have travelled. In all probability it would have started at Washwood Heath
Sidings one of the LMS' major marshalling yards handling coal in the
region.
