British Railways built 2MT 2-6-2T No 41232 approaches Kenilworth Junction Signal Cabin to collect the single line staff

British Railways built 2MT 2-6-2T No 41232 approaches Kenilworth Junction Signal Cabin to collect the single line staff. The locomotive is carry lamps depicting its a Type 4 service which was categorised by British Railways as an 'Express freight train pipe fitted throughout with the automatic brake operative on NOT less than 90% of the vehicles. Maximum speed 55 mph. A maximum speed of 60 mph will apply in respect of certain trains specifically indicated in the Working Timetable.'

Designed by HG Ivatt for the LMS, the class was introduced between 1946 and 1952. Based on the LMS Stanier 2-6-2T which was, in turn, based on the LMS Fowler 2-6-2T, ten were built by the LMS before nationalisation in 1948, and were allocated No 1200 to No 1209. British Railways added the prefix '4' to their numbers so they became No 41200 to No 41209. A further 120 were built by British Railways and were allocated No 41210 to No 41329. Most of the class were built at Crewe works including No 41272 which was the seventh thousand locomotive to be built there. The last ten members of the class were built at Derby works. Fifty engines of the class were fitted with push-pull equipment, these being No 41210 to 41229, No 41270 to No 41289 and No 41320 to No 41329. No 41232 was one of the Crew built locomotives being built there in August 1949 and was to remain in service until August 1965 when it was withdrawn from 6G Llandudno Junction to be scrapped by Drapers of Hull.
