LMS 3P 2-6-2T No 17 is seen standing at Leamington Avenue
station's platform one whilst at the head of a local Coventry to Leamington
passenger train. As is recorded many times in publications the Fowler 2-6-2T
design, and indeed its Stanier successor, was never a success because of the
inadequate steam passages and short travel valve adopted by Derby design
office.
The subsequent modification to the cylinder design, through
the use of outside steam pipes, did not achieve any notable success. Built at
Derby in March 1930 No 17 remained in service until November 1959 when it was
withdrawn from Trafford Park shed to be scrapped by the Central Wagon Company
of Wigan shortly afterwards.
