Close up of a railway workman inspecting the brake gear on the mineral wagons standing in the exchange sidings with the GWR

Close up of image 'lnwrlave1351' showing a railway workman inspecting the brake gear on the mineral wagons standing in the exchange sidings with the GWR. The railway companies took great care in inspecting goods wagons en-route with particular emphasis on the wheels, bearings and brake gear. The railways for many years used loose coupled wagons with axle boxes greased in a primitive fashion which limited their speed and increased their vulnerability. Wheel Tappers and Shunters were railwaymen whose jobs was to tap the wheel the wheel to ensure its ring sounded correctly otherwise it might well indicate a crack in the wheel itself. Its noticeable in this photograph that all the wagons on view are mostly railway owned including the GWR mineral wagon, GWR guards van, SR Van and an what is thought to be a LMS meat van. Note too the gas lamp post and water tower.
