British Railways built Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2T No 41228 is seen
standing at platform one at the tail end of a two-coach motor fitted local
train to Weeden. Built at Crewe works in October 1948 No 41228 later worked on
southern region metals before being withdrawn from Nine Elms in June 1964 to be
scrapped at G Cohen of Kettering in November 1964. The term motor fitted
referred to the apparatus seen on the running plate either side of the
smokebox. The equipment allowed the driver to control the locomotive whilst
situated in the driving compartment at the end of the last coach. In this view
the driver is seen walking to the driving trailer prior to entering the cab.
The fireman would remain in the cab to fire the locomotive and consequently had
to 'know' the route well enough to ensure the boiler fulfilled demand without
wasting steam by blowing off.
