Marton Junction: lnwrmartj1326
View of Marton Junction from Honingham Hill Road bridge
looking towards Rugby with the former LNWR signal cabin on the left. In this
view at Marton Junction, everyone is being naughty, as the trap protecting the
main line is to the rear of the home signal ex the Southam line. The 8F should
be the far side of the home signal as a Rugby-Leamington motor has been
signalled, so the signalman and engine crew are all breaking the rules! The
junction was brought into existence with the opening of the single branch line
to Weedon on 1st August 1885. On 5th July 1965 the line to Weedon was closed
except for the stretch to Southam and Long Itchington. The goods train carrying
the chalk to the cement works after this date ran via Rugby and reversed at
this junction. It was exactly 100 years later when the line closed following
the loss of the contract to haul chalk to Southam Cement works on 1st August
1985, the line being lifted the following year.
