LNWR 2-4-0T No 2250 runs bunker first at the head of a local
passenger service to New Street station circa 1877. Harry Jack and Peter
Chatham wrote in the LNWR Society Journal, Volume 5, Number 12, March 2009
'This is on the Stour Valley line between Birmingham New Street and Monument
Lane stations, looking north-west from Sheepcote Lane signal cabin, which is
immediately behind the photographer. The buildings on the right were the Stour
Valley Works, a wood turnery. Barker Street, a continuation of Sheepcote Lane,
lay behind the buildings, some of which survived - perhaps incredibly, given
their apparent state here - into the 1960s. A hundred yards or so behind the
camera was the bridge carrying St Vincent Street over the line, and just beyond
that were the Monument Lane engine sheds. The 2-4-0 tank No 2250 was built in
December 1876, and carries shed plate 10, Monument Lane.'
'The first three carriages can be identified as Brake
Third No 76, Third No 844 and Composite No 439. Whilst they are all typical of
the style of the 1860s, and the first five are close-coupled, they show some
notable variations in detail. The third vehicle, for instance, is markedly
higher in body side and has much deeper windows. The far end compartment of the
brake third is lettered THIRD SMOKING in a distinctive serif style.
Monograms are applied, but no coats of arms. The photographer was
almost certainly Richard H. Bleasdale, who took several shots of engines at
Monument Lane sheds in 1877.'
