View of four ex-LMS locomotives representing the range of locomotive power allocated to the shed to fulfill its duties seen in the early 1950s. From left to right: the cab of ex-LMS 4F 0-6-0 No 44361, ex-LMS 4F 0-6-0 No 44490, ex-LMS 4P 4-4-0 'Compound' No 40936 and an unidentified ex-LMS 2-6-4T tank locomotive. Behind the Compound which is coupled to Stanier's experimental high sided tender (see image 'lnwrmlsh74') the water softener tank can be seen. The locomotives are stabled on the Promenade sidings numbers 9 and 10. Built by Andrew Barclay Limited in February 1927 No 44361 was to remain in service until November 1959 when it was withdrawn from 9F Heaton Mersey shed. Class mate No 44490 was built by the North British Locomotive Company in December 1927 and it had a much longer working life being withdrawn in August 1965 from 8F Springs Branch shed. The Compound, which had been built by Derby works in September 1932, was to remain at Monument Lane being officially withdrawn in January 1961.
