Monument Lane Shed: lnwrmlsh2262
LNWR 0-4-2 No 601 is posed for the camera after being coaled and
watered at Monument Lane shed in 1865. It was later numbered 1906 in 1874. The
locomotive had passed beneath St Vincent Street's overbridge to reach the
shed's coal stage and turntable. To the right and above the tender are steps
which Tony Higgs states links Sheepcote Lane with St Vincent Street and are not
just evident today but can be climbed. To the left of the smokebox two
gentlemen can be seen with one wearing a top hat indicating his seniority. They
together with the enginemen and other railway workers are posing for the camera
as photography was very much in its infancy. Richard H Bleasdale is believed
to have been the photographer and the photograph is available courtesy of
Manchester Model Railway Club at Kidderminster Railway Museum.
