View of a clean Monument Lane shed showing an unidentified solitary ex-LNWR 0-6-2T locomotive. With no other locomotives evident at the shed it must not only be a working day but one when the shed was fully stretched in handling its assigned trips. Holiday periods were just such one occasion when the city's factories would close down for a week and tens of thousands of workers and their families would travel to the seaside both for the week and for excursions. In such instances all types of locomotives would be pressed into service including goods locomotives. The photographer is looking in the general direction of Wolverhampton with the main line from New Street to Wolverhampton out of view to the right. The shed, known to enginemen as the "new shed" was built in 1884 to a non-standard LNWR design with two pitched roofs instead of the normal northlight pattern arrangement.
