Looking towards the 1936 built Ash Plant with the shed on the left and the coaling stage out of view on the right. The Ash Plant was built at the same time as the 75 ton Coaling Plant was built, the latter replacing the traditional LNWR coaling stage with Water Tank over the structure. The shed was always stretched in operational terms and Hawkins & Reeves note in their book 'Engine Sheds of the LMS - Volume one the LNWR', that 'Nuneaton was a very busy shed handling more coal per day than the much larger depot at Rugby and the coaling plant was often overworked. Overcrowding became critical during the war when at times the yard was actually jammed and great delays occurred to engines leaving the shed'.
