LMS 4-6-2 Coronation class No 6220 'Coronation' is seen passing
through Nuneation station at the head of the inaugral down 'Coronation Scot'
express service on 5th July 1937. Built at Crewe works in June 1937, No 6220
was the LMS' response to the LNER's streamlined A4 class that hauled the Flying
Scotsman train. After the removal ofthe streamlining in the austere post-war
period No 6220 remained in service until April 1963 when it became the first of
the class to be withdrawn - from Upperby shed in Carlisle - to be scrapped
during May 1963 by Crewe works.
