View of a local passenger train to Ashby standing on the left in the bay platform whilst milk churns are being loaded into a guards compartment. On the right is a lady is saying her farewells to a passenger on a down express travelling north to Stafford. The bay platform was built in 1876 as part of the upgrading of the station to accommodate the increase in traffic with the opening of the Ashby branch and the line through to Leicester. Careful observation of the branch train shows that the coaching stock is made up of all six-wheel coaches with the nearest coach being all Second Class compartments, the guards van has one Second Class compartment whilst the coach furthest away appears to be made of Third Class compartments. The vehicle behind the tender appears to be a horse-box with a groom's compartment. The locomotive is probably a LNWR 2-2-0 Problem class design (see image 'lnwrns1634') with its distinctive curved outside cylinders.
