Modifications to the station arising from the erection 25000 V (25 kV), 50 Hz AC, overhead catenary resulted in the closure of the box in January 1961. Electrification on the West Coast main line was carried out from the late 1950s to the mid 1960s under the 1955 BR modernisation plan from Euston to Crewe. Peter Lee states in his book on the Trent Valley that part of Nuneaton No 2 Signal Box duties were transferred to No 1 box along with Wilf Cox, one of the two men seen in the photograph.
