An Edwardian view of the construction of the southern section of the up marshalling yard with Nuneaton No 3 Signal Box clearly seen on the right. The need to extend the yard was essential because by 1917, as Peter Lee notes in his book on the Trent Valley railway, 'Some 35 or 40 collieries entered coal traffic on the system in the LNWR yards at Nuneaton. In addition, there were perhaps ten local brickyards, seven stone quarries in addition to traffic generated by a number of heavy engineering companies on the Coventry line and other service industries'.
