Another view of the steam powered portable engine with the Midland Railway's Birmingham to Leicester line in the background. This view clearly shows how the portable engine provided mechanical power to other equipment through the use of belts and pulleys. In the absence of gearboxes the speed required by the ancillary equipment was attained by a combination of the speed of the cylinder and the diameter of pulley used.
