View of Nuneaton's Ransome & Rapier 60 foot vacuum operated turntable installed in 1938 with a working capacity of 150 tons. As the turntable serviced roads approaching from one side only each road had to be protected by a buffer stop being located opposite on the other side of the turntable. The large vertical pipe and connecting tube connected to the locomotive's vacuum pipes and by raising the level of the vacuum the turntable could be turned. Balancing the weight of the locomotive evenly on the turntable was essential to minimise the effort required to turn the locomotive - most important when this activity was operated by manpower alone.
