The reliefmen's shelter was strategically sited at the throat of the coaling roads where the locomotives could be disposed at the end of their turns. To the right of the shelter was one of several water columns that were strategically placed around the yard, with each being protected by a brazier or 'fire devil' used to stop the column freezing up in winter.
