Ex-LNWR 4-6-0 No 5946 'Duke of Connaught' passes Ashby junction at the head of the up Sunny South Express. The Claughton has been fitted with a number of modifications including narrow piston rings, Caprotti valve gear and a larger boiler in an attempt to improve the performance of the class. The flat sided smoke deflectors had to be fitted because the larger boiler caused the smoke to drift and obscure the driver's view. Built as LNWR No 2427 by Crewe works in June 1917, No 5946 received its LMS number in May 1927 and carried until February 1941 when it was withdrawn from service.
