British Railways built 4MT 2-6-0 No 43023 arrives at
platform 2 with a Coventry parcels single coach train. A British Railways Class
08 0-6-0 shunter propels an oil wagon over the hump with the up marshalling
yard still then complete and in full use processing the many coal trains
heading south and being assembled into rakes for their destinations. Note too
the twin gable ends of Nuneaton No 2 Signal Cabin which controlled movements
here at the south of the station with the Up Sidings box on the right. There
used to be another hump beyond this hump to increase the volume of mineral
wagons which could be processed through the yard but this had gone by the
1950s. (These humps were known as the front and back humps by local
railwaymen). Built by Horwich works in January 1949, No 43023 was a Nuneaton
locomotive at the time this photograph was taken having been allocated to the
shed from new up to the end of April when it was transferred to 12D Kirkby
Stephen shed before being transferred, in sequence, to 12A Kingmoor shed in
Carlisle, 10A Carnforth shed before it was allocated to 12D Workington in April
1967, from where it was withdrawn in December 1967 to be scrapped.
