These shunting locomotives were based on Ramsbottom's DX 0-6-0 class and he built an initial twenty such locomotives. His successor, FW Webb, added a further two hundred and thirty-five locomotives, fitting his own standard features in the same manner as he did with the ‘DX’ conversions. In addition to shunting duties they were also widely used for station pilot duties and empty carriage stock workings. The design's coal capacity was more limited than his 0-6-2T locomotive class', resulting in a lower range. Most of the class retained the distinctive sloping Ramsbottom smokebox front until LMS days, and unusually there was never any lining on the back of the bunker. Originally built only with weather boards to protect the crew (as seen above) a few received cabs by the 1890s and many more by 1916.
