Rebuilt ex-LMS Patriot class No 45545 'Planet' is seen passing
under the Midland Railway's Birmingham to Leicester line at the head of a down
express circa 1958. The station and Nuneaton No 7 Signal Box can just be seen
in the distance. Built at Crewe works as parallel boilered Patriot class No
5545 'The Royal Marine' in March 1934 No 45545 was re-boilered in October 1948
when it also received a name change to 'Planet'. The rebuilt Patriot class were
externally identical to the rebuilt Royal Scot class except they lost their
Fowler cab and were given the more modern Stanier cab. Although fitted with the
Patriot's 17" cylinders instead of the Royal Scot's 18" cylinders they were
still able to perform identical duties. After less than sixteen years service
No 45545 was withdrawn in June 1964 from Upperby shed in Carlisle to be
scrapped during November 1964 by Connell, Union Works of Coatbridge.
