British Railways built 2-6-0 4MT No 43025 stands on shed behind an unidentified ex-LMS 2-6-2T 3MT locomotive having just been serviced with coal and water circa 1950. The design had been heavily influenced by US practice (USA S160 2-8-0 freight engines) seen as a result of the large number of US built locomotives used or stored in the UK prior to D Day. The high running board was to provide easy access to the mechanical parts of the locomotive whilst other elements of the design, self-cleaning smokebox and rocking grate were designed to reduce the labour intensive elements of preparing and disposing of locomotives each day. Built at Horwich Works in January 1949, No 43025 only lasted only 17 years in service being withdrawn from Workington shed in September 1965 and scrapped in January 1966 by the Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Company at their Inshaw Works.
