Ex-LMS 8F 2-8-0 No 48693, on a north bound freight, comes off the line from Soho to join the Grand Junction line en-route to Bescot in May 1959. The line to the left proceeds on to Witton and Aston along the original Grand Junction Railway's route to Birmingham. The first vehicle behind the locomotive is an old locomotive tender used for carrying the sludge drained from locomotive boilers during their periodic washouts. Built by Brighton works in March 1944, No 48693 was one of the many hundreds of locomotives ordered by the Railway Executive during the war to both LMS and ROD designs. The 8F locomotives were acknowledged as being one of the best freight locomotives built and were one of the last freight locomotives to operate on British Railways. The closure of steam locomotive sheds was undertaken on a geographical basis with the LMS's north west sheds being the last. Hence after being transferred northwards No 48693 was to remain in service until it was withdrawn from Northwich shed (CLC) in April 1967.
