Close up of image 'lnwrpb83' showing ex-LMS 4MT 2-6-4T No 42674, designed by Charles E Fairburn on a five coach local passenger train. A total of 277 of these locomotives were built between 1945–1951, and were numbered by British Railways as No 42050 to No 42186, No 42187 to 42299 and No 42673 to 44699. This design was based on the earlier Stanier 2-6-4T design which had been built from 1935 until 1943 which itself was based upon Fowler's 2-6-4T of which 125 were built between 1927–1934. It was also the basis for the later British Rail Standard Class 4MT tank. The Fairburn locomotives were used mainly for suburban passenger trains with forty-one examples of the class being constructed to by Brighton railway works for service on the Southern Region of British Railways in 1950 and 1951, replacing earlier designs. The majority of these remained on the Southern Region throughout their workling lives. The locomotive seen above, No 42674, was built at Derby Works in April 1945 during the last days of the Second World War and was only to be in service for a total of seventeen years before being withdrawn from Stoke-on-Trent shed in November 1962.
