Close up of image 'lnwrrm2431' showing a mixture of upper quadrant signals and colour light signals, the latter used for controlling the main lines. At rugby the upper quadrant signals were used primarily on sidings and secondary routes such as the former Midland branch to Leicester, the up goods line and and the line to the engine shed. The thin tall timber 'sentry' box would be staffed during foggy weather by linesmen (P&W men) who would place explosive caps on the rails to warn drivers of the state of the signals ahead.
